Making the Transition from Summer to School a Little Easier

Summer always seems like it will last forever until suddenly you’re buying school supplies, filling out forms, and realizing the first day of school is right around the corner. While there’s often a lot of excitement about seeing friends and starting a new grade, going from relaxed summer days back to structured schedules is a big adjustment for many kids. Even positive changes can feel overwhelming when so much is changing at once.

It’s typical to notice more emotions this time of year. Some kids become clingier, more irritable, or more anxious as the first day gets closer. Others may seem quieter than usual or have more meltdowns over things that normally wouldn’t bother them. These behaviors are often less about not wanting to go back to school and more about processing change and all of the unknowns that come with it.

One of the easiest ways to help is by making the transition gradual instead of waiting until the night before school starts. Begin shifting bedtimes a little earlier, ease back into morning routines, and talk with your child about what they’re excited for and what they’re feeling nervous about. Small moments like picking out a backpack together, visiting the school playground, or letting them help pack lunches can build excitement while making the new routine feel more familiar.

f your child is having a hard time, remember that they don’t always need you to fix it. Often, they just need to know their feelings are okay and that someone understands what they’re going through. Feeling heard can make a bigger difference than having the perfect answer.

The start of a new school year doesn’t have to be perfect. With a little patience, consistency, and reassurance, most children settle into their new routine and build confidence along the way.
